Safety & Security

Saskatoon Transit takes the safety and security of our customers and operators very seriously. We have a zero tolerance policy towards physical and verbal abuse towards anyone on the bus, including the operator. Non-compliance will result in removal from the bus, even if you haven’t reached your final destination.

Each bus is equipped with an onboard cameras a safety measure for everyone on the bus and are shared with Saskatoon Police Services if requested as part of an investigation.

Staying Safe with Saskatoon Transit

Riding Saskatoon Transit is one of the safest ways to travel around the City. Even still, there are a few things we ask of you to help ensure you remain safe at all times:

• As the bus pulls to the curb, please step back a foot or two to ensure the bus can safely arrive at the stop without causing harm to you or anyone else.
• Be smart when waiting for the bus in the dark. Stay under the light of a street lamp, where available, and avoid using a personal audio device so that you can hear what’s happening around you.

Help keep transit safe for everyone

If you see something that concerns you while riding Saskatoon Transit or using a transit terminal, it's important to know where to report it.

Call 911 immediately for:

• Assaults or violent attacks
• Crimes in progress (vandalism, drug use, graffiti)
• Threats of violence
• Weapons or suspected weapons
• Medical emergencies
• Fires or significant hazards
• Someone in immediate danger

For concerns on a Transit bus or within the Downtown, Broadway or Riversdale Business Improvement Districts:

• You see someone in distress or experiencing mental illness behaviours
• You’re lost or you feel uncomfortable or unsafe
• There’s a suspicious person or someone loitering
• You see negative street activity, substance abuse or public intoxication

• A crime has already occurred

• You want to report vandalism, theft or nuisance activity and the offender has left

Transit operator or Supervisor. Tell Transit operator or staff

Transit operators can discreetly contact a Supervisor to arrange for emergency services when required. Notify Transit staff if:

• Safety concerns in terminals
• Feeling unsafe on a bus:
  • Harassment, aggressive or threatening behaviour
  • Drug or alcohol use
  • Smoking or vaping
  • Property damage or vandalism
  • Individuals who appear to need help
  • Suspicious activity
• You need immediate assistance while travelling

What information should I provide?

Do not put yourself at risk to collect information. If it is safe to do so, try to include:

• Bus route number
• Bus number (if available)
• Terminal or stop location
• Time of the incident
• Description of what happened
• Description of the person or people involved
• Photos or videos only if it is safe and legal to capture them

Reporting concerns helps Transit, Saskatoon Police Service and community partners identify trends, respond appropriately and improve the safety and comfort of buses, terminals and public spaces for everyone.

Surveillance cameras onboard

Surveillance cameras are in useon buses and Saskatoon Transit facilities for the protection of visitors, staff and City property.  The collection of personal information through the recording of video surveillance images and audio is authorized under section 24 of The Local Authority Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
