Summer and Winter Weather
Saskatoon weather can change quickly—from extreme heat to heavy snow. No matter the season, Saskatoon Transit works to keep you moving safely and reliably. Here’s what to expect and how to prepare for your trip.
Summer weather: Staying cool on your ride
Air conditioning on buses
Every Saskatoon Transit bus is equipped with air conditioning and is regularly inspected as part of planned, year-round maintenance.
The air conditioning system turns on automatically when the temperature inside the bus rises above 21°C. On cooler or breezy days, it may take a bit longer to activate.
Why it might feel warm
During very hot weather, it may sometimes feel like the air conditioning is not working as expected. This can happen because:
- Extreme heat puts extra demand on the system
- Frequent door openings let cool air escape
- Weather conditions can slow how quickly the bus cools down
How you can help
To help keep the bus comfortable for everyone:
- Keep windows closed while the air conditioning is running
- Avoid opening roof hatches unless necessary
Keeping doors, windows, and roof hatches closed helps the system work properly and keeps cool air inside.
Maintenance and repairs
Hot weather can lead to more wear on air conditioning units. If an operator reports an issue, the unit is inspected and repaired as needed.
Winter weather: Staying safe and prepared
Plan ahead and stay informed
Weather conditions can change quickly, so it’s important to stay prepared:
- Check your local weather forecast regularly
- Use apps like Transit or Google Transit for real-time bus locations
- Pin your regular routes to receive service alerts
You can also check Service Alerts and @stoontransit Twitter for updates on detours or stop closures.
Dress for the weather
Wear warm, loose-fitting layers to trap heat and adjust as needed. Choose footwear that provides warmth, traction and support.
Be patient
Winter driving conditions can lead to delays. Give yourself extra time to get where you need to go.
What to expect in winter conditions
Saskatoon Transit operates in all weather conditions, but winter storms can affect service:
- Up to 5 cm of snow: Expect delays in some areas
- 5–15 cm of snow: Expect delays and possible frequency disruptions, especially during peak times
- Blizzard, ice storm, or more than 15 cm: Expect delays and reduced service frequency; direct routes from downtown to major terminals may be implemented
As conditions improve, find updates at Service Alerts, the Transit app and @stoontransit Twitter
City crews work to clear streets and pathways during snowfall. For snow clearing information or to report an issue, contact Customer Service at 306-975-3100.
Safety reminder: Safe Bus program
The Safe Bus program runs year-round. If you are lost, cold, scared, or hurt hold up your hand (palm out) to an approaching bus, or go to a parked bus. The operator will stop, provide shelter, and contact emergency services if needed.
