Make winter a breeze – hop on the bus and leave the car worries behind
Here are some key tips to ensure a safer and more enjoyable journey during the colder months:
- Stay up to date on current weather conditions. Weather conditions change quickly, and you need to be prepared. Remember to check your local weather report regularly.
- Stay informed. In severe weather conditions, it's important to stay up to date on the status of your bus.
- Transit service alerts regarding detours or temporary bus stop closures and real-time bus locations are available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Transit on desktop.
- Pin the routes you use often and receive service alert push notifications.
- Check our service alerts page or Twitter to see if there are any service changes or detours that might affect you.
- Dress for the weather. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting layers. This traps body heat and allows you to add or remove layers depending on the weather conditions. Make sure you wear the right footwear too - something that keeps your feet warm while allowing for traction and support.
- Be patient. Winter driving conditions can result in delays for everyone - including buses! Give yourself a little extra time to get to your destination.
- Remember. Saskatoon Transit’s Safe Bus program runs year-round. If you are lost, cold, scared, or hurt, hold up your hand (palm out) in the direction of an approaching Transit bus, or go to a parked bus, & the operator will stop, contact emergency services & provide shelter to the next terminal.
What can you expect?
No matter what the weather, residents of Saskatoon can rely on Saskatoon Transit to make sure they reach their destinations. As a winter city, we know what to expect once the snow starts to fly, and while we rarely let it stop us from going about our business, it can slow us down.
- 5cm of snow = Expect Delays
- Service may be delayed in some areas of the city.
- 5cm – 15cm of snow = Expect delays and potential frequency disruptions
- It is likely there will be delays on many routes, particularly during peak times, such as rush hour.
- Blizzard, Ice Storm, > 15cm of snow = Expect delays and frequency disruptions
- There will be frequency reductions and direct route service from downtown to major terminals will go into effect.
- As conditions improve updates will be issued on Transit Twitter, the website and the Transit app.
When we get a heavy snowfall (5cm or more), City crews will be out working to keep pathways clear and safe.
